Back in October the transmission in my 330K mile 1997 CSE went out on me. (No reverse, no auto shift, loses drive after a few seconds.) Attempts to clean and free up the valve body, and even replace with a used valve body, made no difference. I also found that it was not possible to bring the band into adjustment, suggesting it was extremely worn or broken.
At that time a fellow Saabnet reader alerted me to a used trans available at a junkyard not far from me for $175. It was supposed to be out of a 1995 9000 with 95,000 miles. So I picked that up and it sat in back of my station wagon all winter. Now that good weather is here I've started in on this project again.
I've been in email contact with a participant here who has done the job and has been very helpful. The primary instructions I've been following are from this photo-illustrated guide to pulling a manual transmission: http://www.saab9000.com/procedures/powertrain/mantransmission/replace.php. I found additional info specific to the automatic transmission here: http://dudes.berrydejager.com/replacement-of-the-automatic-gearbox.
I've been working on this little by little for a few weeks now and today dropped the subframe.
(Yes, that's a very rusty front fender!)
A couple of things I noticed on the used transmission. The shift control lever is different, it has a ball end rather than a straight shaft. It looks though like I should be able to unbolt and swap the levers. Also it appears that the throttle control cable might be broken where it enters the trans? I can't tell if it is supposed to be two pieces like that (there is a rubber boot) or if the plastic insert is broken.
This is a big job, frankly I probably bit off more than I could chew but it was either this or part out the car. I sure hope after all this that the used tranny is good. I'm not going to do this job more than once!
