I have seen some posts about replacing the stock head unit, but nothing really helpful.
Anyway I just replaced the head unit in my 96 9000. there was an amp under the passenger seat. Unlike what some of the things online say, this amp is 4 channel and does both front and back speakers.
I used a crutchfield adapter which needs to be cut on both sides so you can plug in the speaker wires properly. the power ground etc plug in just fine without modification.
Some people say that you have to attach rca plugs to the speaker wires that go to the harness. DO NOT DO THIS it is stupid and you will have noise, and probably need a deck with 4v out and even still it will suck.
Some people will say you need a variable line level converter but these have rca on one side and wires on the other so you will pay money and still have to get and wire extra plugs and more stupid stuff like that.
Some people will say that you should just run new speaker wires from the deck to all the speakers, I have no problem with this but it is unnecessary.
just hook up the speaker wires and power wires from the deck to the crutchfield adapter. (note that the red and yellow 12v constant and 12v switched are reversed so hook red to yellow and yellow to red)
Take out the 4 torx screws that hold in the passenger seat
Tilt the seat back and unhook the harness to the amplifier
cut 8 wires about 4 inches long and use them to jump the harness you just disconnected from the amp.
It is really simple you will see that there are 2 green wires going into the harness, just connect those 2 together, there are 2 brown wires connect those together. do the same for the red, the blue, brown/white, the green/white, the red/white, and the blue/white wires and you are done
Optional run some rca cords from the deck to where the stock amp is just cause you are in there and you might decide you want an amp at some future point since power and trigger are there in the harness too to this would be easy.
there not many decks that look stock in these cars, I stuck in an old Nak deck which I like alot
but maybe you could find one of the older jensen heavy duty receiver in green like the one linked below.
