Manual Shifter Ball Socket Holddown Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Thu, 17 Aug 2017 15:31:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My private UL testing lab (i.e. my wife) borrowed my 9000 Aero for a few days while her car was being repaired. Went to drive it and the entire shifter mechanism was very loose. Took off the leather boot and found that the plastic shifter hold down ring was detached, but no parts were broken. Popped the holddown ring back in place, reattached the spring and all was good - for about a day. The holddown ring locks everything in place, the spring is still good and attaches to the hooks, but the ring travels past the three flat "end points" and goes on to the cutouts (hard to explain) and then releases completely. I inserted a few pieces of plastic milk bottle underneath the tabs to act as shims, and it appears to be holding better, but I know that it's only a matter of time before they come out.
So, something in the plastic ball socket or locking ring is either worn or distorted. Short of replacing the entire shifter mechanism (the solution I found in a search), is there a preferred way of addressing this problem? Also, what does the rubber O-ring do?
