I have always put in 5 quarts, which brings the oil on the dipstick to the X in "MAX. 4 quarts, BTW, brings it to the "full" mark on the dipstick. My indy did this on the only time he changed the oil. I added another quart to get it to the X.
Been doing this for the 145K I've owned the car, which is now at 235 K. It drips a bit but I have never added oil between changes except once after a 3 day cross-country trip at 75-90 mph. I think I put in half a quart.
