1992 9000 2.3L turbo 180 k Km
Started overheating after 15 Km on our steep and winding roads.
Big bubble of gas in coolant - coolant gushes out of overflow reservoir when cap removed after some cool down and refill. This behaviour repeats. I re torque head (allowed on this particular engine’s head bolts). No change. I conclude head gasket is likely blown. However, in car’s history a previous overheat had occurred long ago from pinhole leak in coolant hose.
I remove head. Head gasket looks fine, as do valves and plugs. No cracks are discernable on head to gasket surface.
I check all removed bolts. Find 6 of 8 intake manifold bolts heavily rusted. An indication of coolant contamination from an internal head crack?
In retrospect, should have tried something like Bars Leaks as a cheap possible indicator (or unlikely solution) before disassembly.
Before junking this head, considering a leak test in some as yet undetermined way.
Any thoughts from the group?
