How much can you lighten a flywheel.. Steven,
Thank you for posting at TSN!
We did some work relative to lightened SAAB 9000 flywheels some years ago, as the lighter the rotating mass, the more quickly the rise in engine RPM, when needed.
The disadvantage to removal of material of the OEM 9000 flywheels are that this tends to be a modest change when starting with the steel wheel. Many machine shops also will remove material from the face of the flywheel which includes the friction area prompting problems relative to warping at this same clutch contact area.
Also, the other culprit to removing weight from the flywheel is that you would still be forced into employing the SAAB OEM 240mm clutch which tend to be a heavy design.
With the 2.3 liter 9000, we have found that anything greater than a 9 flywheel plus 240mm clutch is plausible and still allows for proper engine idle capabilities plus clutch engagement.
Best of luck with your project!
Sincerely,
GSK at SWEDISH DYNAMICS, INC.
