Take a good look at the rear bushings for the front control arms, which when loose can allow the rear of the control arm to bang against the body. If they have never been changed on your car, they are probably due. New ones will really tighten up the feel of the suspension - I just replaced mine last autumn, no idea if or when previous owners had replaced them.
Also look for cracks in the front bushing caps of the front control arms (see picture). These are prone to cracking and will sound like a loose ball joint when they start disintegrating.
