I have to agree with Simon S: if you can hear your pump, it's probably working. My experience with both the C900 and 9000 fuel pump is that they die when the pump motor no longer turns.
The part about the engine firing on starting fluid has me puzzled, as this seems to indicate that the spark is working. Perhaps the fuel filter is really clogged? Or, it a 1992 a Traction Control System (TCS) car, with all of its problems?
