I had a similar experience with my '96 9000CS. Driving along when suddenly the engine just cutout and all I could do was coast to the side of the road. The car would not start again. I came back next day, the car started up fine and I drove back home.
I worked through the no-start guide and tried replacing the FP relay. A few days later same problem! Car dead on the side of the road. Replaced CPS. This time I just left car idling in my driveway. After about an hour the car died and would not start. Tried pulling codes from the OBD port but I noticed that the OBD interface was not responding at all.
After much investigation I figured out the the CPU on the Trionic ECU was not booting up. There was no clock signal on the board. I replaced the crystal oscillator on the ECU board, put everything back together and the car has been running ok since then - touch wood.
So if you can catch it in the faulty state then see if you can check if the ECU is still alive.
