My knowledge of 9000 audio systems is limited to the ones in 1993 - 1994 models, and I believe that the setup changed a bit in 1995 - but perhaps not too much.
Does the wire that "comes out of the CS player and goes nowhere" look like it is supposed to connect to the "one that comes from I don't know where and is not connected to anything", i.e. are they matching 8- or 10-pin connectors? If so, that is probably the wire that is for control of the optional 6-CD changer that is installed in the trunk; these cars came pre-wired for it, and the other end should be hidden beneath the carpet on the left side of the trunk in the rear corner. If your car didn't have a changer, the wires don't need to be connected to anything.
I suspect that your single CD player died. It's 23+ years old, delicate, and lives in a harsh environment. I have two of them for my 1994 car, neither is playing single CDs, even factory recorded CDs. Wasyl said that he might be able to fix it, or might not - I haven't sent it to him yet. Instead, I use my Clarion CDC635 six-CD changer, controlled by the buttons on the single CD player, when I'm not listening to the radio - you can find these new and used on Ebay.
