Re: Oil Pressure Warning Light Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Fri, 7 Sep 2018 19:31:33 In Reply to: Re: Flash Codes, Stephie [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 6 Sep 2018 18:33:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I asked about the oil can symbol light because that's another typical failure - I had to replace the oil pressure sensor on several older cars, including my last 9000.
With the ignition key in the "on" position and the car not running, as when about to start the car, the oil can light should be illuminated, as there is no oil pressure. Once the engine starts and is running, the light should turn off, because there is oil pressure above the minimum amount that triggers the light. The typical failure is that the sensor dies; you can test if the light itself works by disconnecting the one wire that goes to the sensor and grounding it, then turn the key to "on" to verify. The replacement part is pretty generic, costs about $5.
Maybe not the most important thing that is on your plate currently, but if it's not working put it on your list. One of my friends killed the engine in his SAAB 900T convertible by driving it without enough oil, ignored the light; on my C900, the oil pressure sensor cracked and was squirting oil under the hood - at least that time the light turned on.
