The two metal pieces are flat springs that hold the switch in the control panel. I wrote about how I fixed my fan switch at the link. The old sticky grease has got to be cleaned out of the switch and replaced. Since the tabs were already broken, its somewhat permanent, but it works really well and should last for years.
