Well, here is the problem:
a week ago, I was on the track with my 1978 99 turbo. Late in the day when everything was really hot, I noticed a slight missing under accell... I exited the track, and cooled down a bit and stopped to check out the wiring- eveything looked fine. Tried to get back on, and the engine missed so hard and shuddered under load so much- The problem seemed to be an overheated coil- The coil itself was hot to the touch, when everyone else's was fairly cool. We let it cool down for a good 45 minutes, at which point everything ran great. However, the problem has resurfaced itself a few times now on hot days... Which is everyday now.
A bit of background:
A few days before the track day, I squeezed a 900 intercooler in- In doing so, I relocated the coil closer to the turbo- it was about lined up on the end of the cylinder head. I hadnt much drive time with it in this configuration, until the track day, so the problem had not surfaced before hand. The ignition system is a Jacobs coil booster- I have been using this all along, so I know it works as it should.
The missing is VERY pronounced, and almost feels like fuel cut off. I have checked all connections and everything seems in order.
The clincher:
Today everything ran very smoothly- I parked the car for an hour, and hopped in to go get a battery for my other saab- It starts and idles perfectly- It revs up normally. As soon as it comes under load, it is like you are riding a bucking bronco. OK, a heat soaked coil, right? It is close to the turbo afterall... Well, I swap out coils, and the problem continues. I attempt to bypass the coil booster, and wire it standard. Still, the problem persists... I notice the tach bounces up and down rather erratically when it happens, too. But not always. Sometimes the idle gets rough- the tach starts to dance, and it promptly dies. I am at a loss. I just rebuilt this sucker a few months ago, and this is the first time it has stumped me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I hope to get the car running soon, as my girlfriends fans stopped on her car, so now it overheats... I was hoping to get a battery for my other saab so she could drive it... But now, I cant get to sears, and all three of our cars are dead. What a great day.
