In addition to adding an improved muffler-system (which could affect some performance), there are quite a few sound-deadening materials that can be applied to the floorboards, firewall, inside the door panels, etc. to accomplish this. If you have a "Y" exhaust system already added to your 96, near 3700-3800 rpms, you will set up a resonance that can drown out most things -- until you pass thorough that range. On my 96, that happens to be right about 65mph...
