Gary,
One last comment- proceed without fear.
Yes, you should always know what you're getting into. But know this:
1. These cars were designed to be worked on.
2. They are much simpler than modern cars.
3. There's a ton of people to help you out if you get stuck.
4. How else are you going to learn?
I used to have this wild neighbor, Don the Dragon. I'd be fretting over some job, thinking it all through, hesitating and worrying over what could go wrong. Like the time the rear end exploded in my Ford truck, blowing the spider gears right out the rear cover. I locked up the hubs and limped it home on the front wheels. Don came over to see what was up and I started going through all my hand wringing about this and that. Don listened for about 5 minutes and cut me off. "Get in your garage and get a jack and a torch." In another 5 minutes he had the truck off the ground and the U bolts cut and the old rear end separated from the truck. "There" he said. "Stop your cry-babying. Tomorrow we'll go to a junk yard, pick up another rear end. Then we'll get new U bolts- you never would have gotten those off anyway. We'll be done by dinnertime. You gotta learn to proceed without fear." And we did. I learned a lot from Don the Dragon.
