Check your speedo cable as well. They can catch and do all kinds of crazy things. Disconnect it from the gearbox, and then twist it by hand and see how it feels.
The speedo drive is a nylon gear on the pinion shaft, held in with friction between two spacers. When the nut is loose, the gear no longer has the friction and slips, particularly when you go from being on the gas to off.
I didn't know this until very recently. Someone made an aside about it, and I did some research and found reference to it on Tom Donney's website. I then confirmed it when I had the gearbox out on a particular VSaab that showed the speedo jump. I had seen the speedo jump many times, and never made the connection to a loose pinion nut.
