Well Gary,
I just braved the elements and went out and checked one for you. It's a 3/8" square socket that fits. It's been below zero all this week and I haven't felt like going out to the barn for much of anything.
Interestingly, I first checked the plug from a '71 96 drivetrain that I happen to have sitting on the floor right now, and it had a hex oil level plug in it. I then checked one of my transmission spare parts bins and found two oil level plugs, one square and one hex. I guess I had forgotten that hex was also used, maybe on later transmissions.
Good luck getting the plug out. I've never had a problem with oil level plug. I sure have struggled with a few drain plugs, particularly with the crazy cross-bar thingy. You do know the best method for getting out the drain plug? In case you don't, here's the trick:
Use a long breaker bar. Under the breaker bar put a short piece of 2 x 4. Under that, put a floor jack. Raise the floor jack so that there is pretty good pressure on the socket pushing it up into the drain plug. Lift the suspension an inch or two. Then turn the breaker bar. Finally, when it threads out, watch for spare transmission parts to come out with the oil- pieces of freewheel, bearing, etc. Can't tell how many times that's happened to me...
Good luck!
