brake hose question

So I finally got both rear brake hoses off of my '73 96, and I went to put the new hoses on. I noticed that on the new hoses (but not on the old ones) one threaded end is longer than the other.
The long side fits the drum side fine, but the short side will only connect firmly with the brake lines under the rear seat if I omit the lock nut that was there originally. Is this the correct way to mount these? Or should I install them the reverse way? It seems highly suspect to me that I would have to omit an original piece to get the replacement to fit right.
Any advice is welcome, I don't want to half-ass the brake system!
