Seems like there's a wire in the circuit that's broken, disconnected or shorted. The low tension lead to the coil is energized by the ignition switch through a junction under the dash that (I seem to remember) is on the back of temp. gauge. So, with the key on, check to see that there is power to the coil. If the coil has power, then the fault is between it and the distributor; if not, it's probably in the wiring running through the firewall. You can then run a bypass from the contact on the back of the ignition switch directly to the coil - pulling the wiring harness apart to find a spot of rubbed-through insulation or a broken wire is way more trouble than it's worth.
