Yes, the original mechanical pump has a screen. However, it's easier to change an inline filter than to remove and clean the screen. Also, I think some of the later and aftermarket pumps don't have a removable screen.
A couple of my VSaabs have had gunk-in-the-tank problems and I usually throw an inline filter under the rear seat. That's the one that gets clogged and is easily changed.
