You have not missed anything, the rear transmission snout is a taper and is stuck inside the mount, probably some corrosion contributing, and just needs to be jarred loose. If you're not in a hurry, get some Kroil or 50-50 acetone and transmission fluid (many of my friends swear by it) and apply to the right place (don't think you can get at it from the front) twice a day for as many days as you have. If you're in a hurry, skip that step. Get a long nut with the same thread size as the one you took off (fastener specialist or a very good hardware store). Screw it on until it bottoms on the transmission snout then back off a couple of turns. Now you can stick a suitable drift inside the protruding part of the nut and it will stay centered and you can hit it sharply with a 1 pound or so ball peen hammer.
If you can't find a long nut, use the one you have, screw it on flush then back off two turns which will give you a slight socket for the drift. If you have compressed air, you can get a cheapie air hammer at Harbor Freight or internet, it will rattle that puppy loose in a hurry. The nut trick keeps the drift centered and also keeps you from boogering the transmission snout threads.
