I have driven Saab 2 strokes since 1982 and never locked out the ignition advance. But on every one of them I made sure I had a good correctly functioning distributor that held the correct dwell and timing thru the entire range of operation. See service manual for timing graphs.
Some will say to lock out the advance, but it really boils down to getting everything correct before you monkey with the factory settings. Step # 1 is to make sure the timing mark is correct. Step # 2 would be to remove the distributor and clean and adjust it. Set the timing to spec, and then replace the complete exhaust system. The Skandix sport system is really good. The pipes and mufflers get clogged with carbon oil residue and really cut back the power. That is the biggest key to making a 2 stroke haul ass. Use really good oil, I prefer Redline 2 stroke racing oil. Do not put in too much oil, as it will make the engine run too lean. Two strokes are all about breathing - so make sure you have the correct air filter assembly too. Good luck and enjoy your new toy!
