That is a slipping clutch. In the higher gears there is more mechanical advantage. It's the telltale pattern for emerging clutch slippage. It's not the freewheeling--when that goes, it goes fast.
If you want to know more, there is a louvered inspection plate at the top of the transmission. Remove the two screws and the inspection plate, and look down with a strong light to see if there is any oil leaking. Clutch slippage is due to wear or an oil leak from either the engine side or the transmission side. If you suspect an oil leak, you can temporarily recover some clutch function by pouring brake cleaner fluid down the inspection cover onto the clutch disk--hat little tick got me home to Maryland from Vermont one summer!
In any case, you probably have to get ready to do an engine-out clutch replacement and whatever other housekeeping you might want to do with the motor out of the car. Think of it as a marvelous opportunity!
