No I got the axle nut off with little fuss. It's the slotted retaining ring that holds the wheel bearing itself that I cannot get to turn.
I tried and failed to get it to break free with a heavy sledge hammer and a punch engaging the slot, but that didn't budge it at all. However after discussing it with D. Levesque he agreed to lend me the tool he's made for removing that ring so hopefully I'll have some success once it arrives. But if anybody has any other ideas I'm still open to suggestions.
