Thank you for the response. I was too busy to attend to the car until recently. I compressed the spring and everything pulled out pretty easily. I have seperated the axle from the knuckle now, so all I am left with is to get the lock ring off and tap the old bearing out.
I cannot detect any play or grittiness in the old bearing so I may try cleaning it out and repacking it before trying to get the lock ring off (which still presents a problem). When I pulled the axle apart from the knuckle I found a load of petrified grease between the CV and knuckle (outside of the wheel bearing oil seal) and wonder if maybe the noise I was hearing was caused by all this old dried up grease (the grease in the bearing does not look much better so maybe all it needs is to be cleaned out and repacked?).
Thank you again for the responses.
