Hi Tom,
There are many options, but probably the most common is to use a classic Saab 900 alternator from '81-'83. It has an internal regulator so you can ditch the one on the fender.
Know that you have to swap over the 96 pulley and fan over to the 900 pulley. Takes 5 minutes. Or less.
The benefit is better, tighter voltage regulation due to the internal electronic regulator of the 900V. And you get many more amps- 80A plus with the 900 vs 35A for the stock alternator.
There used to be an excellent article on the internets by a fellow named Bill Tubbs. I have two saved links but find they both are broken. Seems like someone needs to do a little update article on how to do this swap. Maybe this spring...
