The manual transmission may be bulletproof but the automatics can have problems. Mine failed at only 37k miles. It was months shy of its suggested fluid change interval (6 years) which I was planning to do at the car's next service. Instead it failed without warning. Backed the car out of my driveway, shifted to drive and the car wouldn't move. Apparently valve bodies have been a problem on the Aisin-Warner AF40D in any car that has used the transmission. I determined that the identical transmission was used in the 2011-2013 Buick Regal Turbo. Sourcing the replacement through GM was vastly less expensive: $2700 from GM versus $6000 to $8000 via Orio or other Saab part sources. My extended warranty company had been preparing to insist upon using a rebuilt transmission until I showed them that a new one could be bought for virtually the same price as a used one. I'm told that GM/Buick issued TSB's for a period of 18 months about problems with the Regal. And then they stopped. Problem solved I guess. My replacement transmission is an updated version: AF40D II versus AF40D.
