But,from the enhanced picture, which I realize is a poor substitute for actually seeing the car, I still think Saab is heading a little too fast into the general homogeneity of mid-priced Euro-sedans.

Don't get me wrong - there are lessons for Saab to learn from Audi, VW, Volvo et al, particularly with regard to marketing... but I'm not sure that slapping a Saabish nose on a nondescript body is really the answer. In fact, I would say that each of those companies have grabbed market share in the past few years because they succeeded in mating fresh, mold-breaking exterior designs with a tradition of both technical and build quality. Saab has had all of these attributes in the past, but it seems to be skimping on the the 'fresh design' part of the equation. I suppose the General paranoia (intentionally cap'd) about platform-sharing may have some merit in this regard.

Lets just hope the new 9-3 maintains the Saab tradition of throwing a shockingly sporting character into a everyday practical car. Then again, I'm one who believes a decent hatch design is a necessary component of a truly everyday practical car. Sidenote: In fact, I was always disappointed, (but not altogether surprised) that BMW failed to ever sell a hotter engined, simple trim version of its 318ti hatch in the late 90's. That would have been an interesting Saab alternative.

Anyway, like the rest of us, I hope the pics are misleading and the new 9-3 isn't an embarrasment to what we all view as a wonderful heritage.
