I recently changed from a 98 900SE manual to a 2001 9-3SE. The differences I have found are as follows:
Increased HP is evident in all gears. I know that many say you should only feel a difference at high speeds, but my experience is that I can feel it at all speeds/gears.
I have not tried an auto tranny but you may want to reconsider because your '95 had the cable clutch assembly. My 98 was the first year with a hydralic clutch (subsequent models have the hydraulic) and you should have a more effortless shifing experience.
Routine Maintenance is part of the package and would save over 500 dollars over the course of 30K miles.
Steering seems to have been improved with the 9-3. It's hard for me to describe just how but it seems to me to be more responsive and smoother.
Onstar is free for the first year in a 2001 model. I am not sure of the value and will have to consider paying for the second year.
Some of the sheetmetal looks neater and more flaired which I think is an improvement.
Seats seem a tad wider (driver/passenger).
Comes with a CD player in the dash.
Well those are the differences that come to mind.
Hope that helps.
