I am using the headlight protector film from Griot's Garage (http://www.griotsgarage.com) on my 1998 900SET. It is similar to the X-pel or StonGard products, except you cut it to fit yourself from a large sheet.
Anyway, I have had no problems with excess head build up, uneven cooling that might cause cracking of the lenses, discoloration of the film, or the headlight wipers. The film does just what the ads say, I have had several rock strikes to my lights with no breakage or damage at all.
