but I just liked Dean's suggestion of a 300hp vehicle with dent resistant panels for $20K. I thought it married some of the best qualities of these makers. You are correct Bruce...the 9-3SE is certainly $15K more upscale and complex than a Saturn. To qualify my comment on the "quality" issues: The 9-3SE in question has been dealer serviced every 5K mi and has seen 50K mostly highway miles. But (rant begins here) the time it was flat bedded out of my drive due to a bad DI cassette (@5k mi), the two ACC replacements, the annoying shuddering (and sometimes stalling) on cold starts (after 3 plug changes), the 2 rear door (both) latch replacements, the sticking auto locks, a seat belt indicator wiring problem (pinched wires in the seat), interior trim coming off the sunroof, the ECM replacement, intermittant strange humming noises from the dash, the 2 tail light bulbs, 2 interior bulbs, and yes..even a foglamp replacement on a $30K vehicle <2 yrs old have left me with the impression that the quality could be improved. You're also correct that in nearly every respect a Saturn-Saab comparison is apples to oranges. Those interested in comparing the reliability of these makes can refer to survey results from JD Power and Consumer Reports. Don't get me wrong, I truly like the 9-3...it's a unique car with handsome styling, fantastic seats, a high fun quotient and the hatchback is great too. And yes, I have seen posts from owners with vastly different experiences than mine. Yet build quality, particularly electical components, seems to be a long standing problem with Saabs.
