Here's my 2 cents:
Both cars are sufficiently balanced and designed so that to the average driver, identical rubber will yield identical results.
I shod my 99 9-3 with Bridgestone Blizzaks 195x55 16's. I went from the slip and slide to a very acceptable handling level. My inlaws' 9-5 wagon was so-so in the snow on OEM tires and at my rec, they also went to the Blizzaks for a dramatic difference. I didn't notice much difference between the two cars when I drove them as both did admirably.
2 other points. 'Knobby' snow tires *REALLY* affect your braking. I went from the Z-rated Michelins to the Blizzaks and managed a little fender bender on dry pavement. I'm a car nut and was totally unprepared for the change in grip on dry asphalt.
Also, you should NOT be using winter mode for deep snow. Winter mode just locks the tranny out of first gear and forces it to start out in 2nd gear. This prevents your torquey motor from spinning the wheels from a standing start or at slow speeds. In deep snow, your car has a tremendous amount of rolling resistance. By running in winter mode and pushing a huge load through the tranny, you make it run hot and shortens the life. If you are going to run in deep snow for long distances, your car can actually benefit from using the easier turning effort available in first gear!
