Whenever I think my '00 9-3 base is a rattle-trap, I just drive my old Toyota truck around for while and I'm cured!
Seriously, I think I'm one of the lucky ones that managed to somehow end up with a really solid, rattle-free Saab. But, I HAVE experienced some of the same problems. I had the rattly rear driver's side seat hinge that rattled until I stuck a rubber ball under the seat. I have the clicking above the driver's side window. I have the clicking from the dash as the defrost vents warm-up. I have the clicking in the little panel that houses the rear-view mirror adjustment buttons. I also have an interesting little groan (kind of a squeeaaakk) that comes out of the driver's side seatbelt latch when I breathe.
Here's the deal.. Whenever 2 seperate parts touch each other, they want to stick together. To get them to move relative to each other, you need to overcome friction. When they finally move, it's sudden, and a sound is produced. Most of the undesirable noises in my Saab are these random clicks and ticks created by the rubbing-together of parts.
Is it realistic to expect a car, any car, to NOT make these sounds? A car is a collection of parts, connected to each other, rubbing around, and dissipating energy in the form of clicks, ticks, squeeks, and other interesting sounds. Is there truly someone out there with a car that cruises absolutely silently around town and up and down the freeway? This is my first new car that is of a quality level that I might think it should be totally noise-free, but I just don't think it's possible!
