I understand your point, and when I think that Honda, Toyota, Lexus, and others build these incredibly complex machines that run perfectly for tens of thousands of miles without a single rattle, I am truly awed. But the state of the art of automobile manufacture today certainly allows good companies to assemble cars that do not rattle until well into "middle age".

Here are the rattles on my 1999 9-3:

1. Right rear speaker wires tap the speaker housing over bumps. (I fixed this by wrapping the wires in foam.)

2. Dash speakers rattle at mid-volume. Still not fixed, although the dealer claims to have tried.

3. Driver's window "chatter" when the window is rolled up. Dealer fixed this once but the problem came back about 10000 miles later. The problem is supposedly a bolt that works itself loose.

4. This is the newest: some engine component (I forget what -- BPC or something like that) makes a loud rattle around 2200 RPM. I told the dealer, and he responded that they're all very aware of this rattling part, but "there's no fix for it, there's nothing that can be done. Just be happy it's not as loud as some of the others I've heard." Now, I'm not even sure this is legal -- "Yes, sir, your car is faulty but we can't fix it, so you'll just have to deal with it." But that's what they said. In fact, here's the problem description from the receipt (I'm paraphrasing): "Customer states engine rattle at 2000 to 2300 RPM. Confirm engine rattles at 2000 RPM. Engine operating to Saab specifications." No kidding.

Sometimes people get unreasonable (like rfellman in my opinion) but I believe today's cars can reasonably be expected to remain rattle-free at least until 40000 or 60000 miles, especially more expensive cars.

Regarding your rattles: The window can be fixed and should be fixed gladly under warranty. It's a loose bolt most likely. Your seatbelt certainly should not be making any noises at all, and should be fixed. In fact, the loud squeak you report could indicate a safety issue. I'd ask the dealer to fix these. As I've said before, my 5 year old Honda Civic remains rattle-free to this day.
