Customize at your own risk... Posted by REM in Seattle [Email] (#4) [Profile/Gallery] (more from REM in Seattle) on Mon, 15 Jan 2001 15:11:48 In Reply to: 9-3 exterior accessories, EMAY, Thu, 11 Jan 2001 18:46:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I personally have no objection if you decide to customize your vehicle, be it a SAAB or something else. I myself have the smoke colored side mounted turn signals on my SAAB because they blend better with the car. But please remember that not everything the DOT mandates on vehicles is just the rambling of a government bureaucracy.
The DOT mandates yellow reflectors on the front and red reflectors on the rear of vehicles so that even when the vehicle parked with the lights off, the front and rear corners can be seen by other drivers. Some cars have separate reflectors built in to the bumper surround, but most vehicles have the reflectors built into the turn signal lens. The SAAB NG900/9-3 has the yellow reflectors built into the front turn signal lens and the red reflectors built in to the rear turn signal lens. None of the clear front and rear turn signals I have seen on any vehicle meet this requirement.
While the clear lens may look great, it will not save your parked vehicle from being hit by an unaware driver. It is your vehicle and you can customize it as you choose. Just be aware of all the ramifications of your decisions.
