...is to make a bunch of previously standard stuff optional. The advantage to that is the fact that Saab's MSRP could indeed be advertized as being lower. The disadvantages are big, however. That would mean that Saab couldn't advertize having certain nice items standard and that people could actually order a stripper Saab. Yes, you can actually order a stripper BMW 3-series. I know somebody who did! Saab would have to be able to supply their cars with fewer features (aka no cruise, trip comp, alloys, etc).
I think that Saab advertizes a pretty cheap price for a pretty well loaded car. The base 9-3s are what, about $26K? And they've got quite a few features that BMW 325s don't have! (aka OnStar, similar power, trip comp, cruise, etc).
You've got a great idea, but I don't think that it's feasable with today's low volume production Saab.
