Once again, another reason why I really like Saabnet! Practical advice from people who not only know about cars, but know about Saabs.
Since this is my first Saab and first car with a turbo, I am trying to learn as much as I can since I like to take good care of my cars and make them last. It sure helps to get objective opinions. I thought that maybe the owner of that shop was talking up Castrol Syntech because that's what their shop uses, but then Syntech does come in 5W-50 while Mobil 1 does not. (Although I can't really complain about Castrol products since I used their 10W-30 GTX dino oil for 11 years in my last car with great results.) I was more interested in the xW-50 issue vs. xW-30.
All in all, I don't begrudge that shop owner from having an oil brand prefernce. Enough folks on these boards do. :-) As you guys said, plenty of today's oils are more than sufficient for today's engines. I just figure that an extra $10-$15 bucks every 5k miles for a good synthetic will pay off in the long run.
Thanks again!
Mark
