I lived in Boulder for several years and went through a lot of cars, including 3 BMW's before arriving at the snowy, high altitude solution --AWD with a turbo. BMW's there are fine in the summer, but they are, frankly, bad snow cars. The things that make them great in the warm and dry are not good in the cold and slippery. Engines that spool up and deliver much torque quickly, front weight bias, RWD, etc. I finally ended up with a limited slip diff and sandbags over the wheel wells, but that 1980's 525 still headed straight for the ditch when it snowed and the throttle was applied, especially coming out of corners. We noted a classic symbol of BMW ownership there called "The BMW Wave", which was a hapless BMW driver standing in the snow on the side of the road waving the end of a yellow polypro tow rope up in the air trying to persuade a passing 4X4 truck to hook him up and pull him out. Many of the people I worked with had summer and winter cars and parked the nice ones all winter and drove beater Jeeps or Subarus safely through the winter. If you are a used BMW buyer, one secret is there are a lot of good low mileage units available in the Rockies that were never driven in winter because of their poor winter performance.
