Joshua,
My $0.02: I turned in a lease on a '97 Maxima SE last year for a Viggen. I'd agree with you that the Max is more solid (no squeaks or rattles in 42k miles)and a bit roomier in front. I'm assuming you had a automatic because it was a rental - which is a shame. The 5-speed Maxima does 0-60 in less than 7 seconds, only a few ticks slower than my Viggen. It puts down the power much easier as well. That said, its mid-range torque is no where near the Viggen. My Maxima, as does my Viggen and nearly every other FWD car, understeers the vast majority of the time.
What do I miss about the Maxima? 1. Its quieter 2. Bulletproof reliability 3. The Bose sound system was fantastic 4. A useful cupholder. What don't I miss? Lousy seats (never did get fully comfortable), boring looks - they have never gotten the trunk treatment right, very soft paint that chipped like crazy, and never fully enjoying driving the car. Would I go back - NO! It was a decent car but it had no soul. I'll take my Viggen with its first class seats, bring a smile to your face turbo, hatch versatility and uniqueness any day.
