Stan,
We definately have the same tastes in cars! I previsouly owned a loaded 1999 Maxima SE - Black with black interior (and I mean all black - sharp!). Mine was automatic, though :-(
I bought my Max new in January 1999, then traded it in for my 1999 Viggen last April...
I agree with you on pretty much all the things you miss about the Max. The Bose stereo was awesome. People ride in the Viggen and talk about how good they think it's stereo sounds, but I tell them there is no comparison to the Bose in the Max. Funny thing, on most Maxima BBS's (and the Nissan Newsgroup) most people would say how lousy the Bose system was, but I thought they were nuts. The engine too, was great. I ALMOST bought the Stillen Supercharger kit for it, but opted not to.
My Maxima had several rattles in the dash - more rattly than any other car I've owned save a '96 Protege. I had it back to the dealer 2 times to have them try to fix. They pretty much were able to get them all out.
Aside from that, the car was very quiet - much more so than the Viggen, and like you said, it rode better (though the SE suspension was pretty harsh at times - with no clear benefit to handling). I guess that proves that each car is very different as far as rattles and stuff like that goes, as evident by the frequent posts on here about Saab rattles (I've had none to speak of in my Viggen).
I just fell in love with the Viggen the first time I saw it. It just oozed the soul that the Maxima, like you said, lacked. My wife has told me that she thinks that I have found my car at last (after many) since I no longer cruise the lots oogling over other cars.
Happy Viggen-ing
Rob
