I nearly bought a Grand Cherokee Limited Quadra Drive V8. Came VERY close. Instead I went with a Toyota 4Runner 4x4 simply due to the Toyota's extra roominess. (it has a huge back seat- might want to check it out too)
Without a doubt, the Jeep and 4Runner are the sports cars of 4x4-based SUVs. ( I don't count the Mercedes M-Class because it's not an off roader, although it's still a truck at heart unlike the RX300, X5, etc). The Jeep's V8 is incredibly powerful and the Quadra Drive 4x4 system is remarkable. I've seen new Grand Cherokees drive off road in places that I never thought they could make. It is by far the most capable off roader SUV on the planet, bar a Land Rover Defender or a Jeep Wrangler (regular Cherokee might come close). The Jeep also has a great ride for having solid axles (those are good in a real SUV). Handling is sound and sporty. I'd consider the 4Runner, too. They've got a new full-time 4x4 system on all models for '01, as well as a new Vehicle Skid Control and Traction Control system. It's not as fast as the Grand Cherokee V8, but Toyota has quality down a bit better.
HOWEVER, if you're not heading off of the pavement at all, there's no reason to buy a 4x4 SUV. Especially not a 4x2 SUV. Much higher center of gravity and generally lower safety scores. A wagon or hatchback like a 9-3 will haul nearly as much, be a lot more fun to drive on road, and a lot more comfortable on the highway.
If you do plan to off road, don't pass up on Jeep's Up Country suspension. It includes a little more ground clearance, skid plates, tow hooks and a few other goodies for off roading. Well worth the asking price.
Please let me know if you have more questions. Jeeps and Saabs are kinda my specialty, although I bought a 4Runner!
