Though I find it hard to believe that you will crack the glass if you put the top down in the cold, I have heard of this being an issue with all convertibles. I vaguely remember reading in the manual that they advise against putting the top down below 35 or 40 degrees for some reason (don't own a convert, so I didn't read that section closely).
I also recall looking at a M-B 500SL back in '92 or so, and the salesman refused to let me cycle the top due to "cold weather". I think it was like 55-60 out, so that Benz roof must be pretty delicate :)
Really, though, the fabric of a soft top does get more brittle when it gets cold and could be damaged over time. I don't think it's the glass that's a limiting factor. More likely the canvas or the servos/hydraulics. And besides, do you usually drive with the roof down when its 30 degrees out? Brr!
