for what it's worth, I would take the Viggen bashing that you read with a grain of salt, same for most "opinions" out there. I just returned from yet another 8 hr. marathon drive, late at night, over hill, dale, highway, by way, etc. and cannot say enough good things about my Viggen, in spite of it's "antiquated platform". I left Chicoutimi, Quebec at 4 :30 pm and got home to NH at 12:30 AM. 488 miles, I hit snow in for 2 hrs notrh of Quebec City on one of the great backroad drives of the north country. No problem with the Nokia studless snows. I cruised at 85-90 mph for 3-4 hrs on highway and averaged 27.8 mpg, I cruised on back roads in NH with all the twisties one could want...all in the greatest seats out there, with loads of luggage space. I'm sure the 3-series has a better suspension, but at what price? If you can get a Viggen for the 30-32 k range like many of us have, I can't think of a better value out there. If you are resigned to spending 37-41k, the decision becomes much more difficult. My vote goes to the S4 Avant. Handling, performance, and luggage room. Though it still wont get the 29-30 mpg I almost always get. But then again, I'd look hard at the A6 2.7T in that price range, too. The 9-5 Aero is really nice as well and has the same great engine and mileage as the Viggen. Decisions decisions! Good luck.
