No I'm not a "typical BMW owner who invaded the BB"... In fact I do most of the work on my car now especially since it's long out of warranty at 95K miles. I'm just stating the facts as I know them...
If you don't do the major services at the dealers, Saab USA in most cases will NOT extend you any favors on warranty or especially out-of-warranty repairs. Why should they? How do they know you did ALL the required major service checks? Did you flush the brake fluid? Did you change all the filters (including fuel filters) on time? Did you use Saab authorized parts or the cheapest you could find at WalMart? Did you check the level of the manual tranny fluid and top it off? (this is not a trivial check by the way)
In my experience, I did all the major service at the dealers and they were GREAT about pointing out any source of troubles that your average person would miss. Yes, I know that Saab is required by law to tell you about general safety recalls but there are MANY more Technical Service Bulletins (TSB's) that you won't hear about... Check out http://www.alldata.com for the list if you don't believe me.
My dealership proactively did ALL the applicable TSB's on my car including swapping in a new water pump, updating the ENTIRE front end suspension to the '95 design, gave me FREE alloy wheels ('94 900's came with STEEL wheels at first), replaced the idler pullies under warranty just to be safe, and replacing a rotted exhaust system just before the warranty expired... and BEST OF ALL...
When I was just OUT OF WARRANTY (55K miles) my transmission seals started leaking... This is NOT something a shadetree mechanic can fix and it costs about $1000 parts and labor... but since I had a record of all the service done and I was a "good customer" Saab completely waived the parts costs and the dealer cut the labor rate in half. I paid just under $400 for the fix (plus they inspected the clutch while they were in there). Would they have done this if I had never set foot in the dealership? NO WAY!
