...which definitely can be damaged by water. The cones can become physically distorted or even rot out in the worst case.
If you have aftermarket speakers with polypro or other synthetic cone material, the likelihood of damage is less, but it can still occur if enough water gets into the works. (Foam surrounds can rot, etc.)
I just open the hatch in a couple of stages when it's wet to minimize the run off.
