I'm not sure about the original amp , because I haven't tried it, but here is what i've done:
The head unit is replaced by a sony mdx player and the speakers are all replaced by polk audio's (door/dash, sounds more natural)
the front speakers and the subwoofer (boston accoustics) are runned by a helix 4ch. amp(4*60w)
the rear speakers are runned from the head unit. I'm very happy with the system like it is now. Especially the helix amp was great value for money ($250) and it's almost the only amp which can be mounted under the passenger seat.
Now to answer to your questions:
1) go for the door/dash components they will run just fine on the amp
just make sure that you look at the sensitivity of your new speakers
(db/1w) the higher the number is the less power you need from your amp
2) They will sound better , but it won't be a big difference.
3) If your thinking to buy a new amp make sure that it's possible to connect it with the head unit and that it will work! I know that the most manufactures protect their sound systems so that you can't connect other brands to it ( exept for the speakers). If it is so, you will have to change the head unit too and also the original amp
