Tough decision, and it all comes down to what features are important to you.

I'd be purchasing a coupe so, for me, there would be no choice. Here in America, we don't get an SE coupe. I probably come down on Bill's side as far as his comments go. I've driven a base and an SE and frankly, I'm also satisfied with the base engine power. In addition, I'm also willing to give up a bit the handling sharpness of the SE in exchange for the more compliant suspension of the base model. The lousy pot holed roads where I live make for a harsh ride on "sport" suspension equipped cars. And the all-season 15" tires of the base are decent enough for me. When they wear out, I can replace them with more performance oriented 15 inchers on aftermarket wheels, and keep the stock wheels for use with some real snow tires for winter.

I like the leather, but really don't want a sun roof anyway. And I don't care about ACC, wood trim or heated seats. I'd like a cloth interior just as well, if only SAAB had a better cloth interior. But the base model cloth is pretty cheesy.

I also tend to purchace rather than lease. And, with the incentives and deals around, like Bill said, you can get into a base SAAB for the price of a Camry Solara or Accord coupe. Much more personality and fun with the 9-3.

But I can't knock folks who like and appreciate all the extra features of the SE. If you want all those extras, you are better off waiting for an SE rather than adding everything to a base model. Plus, as you mentioned, you still won't get the extra power, side skirts and air dam and a few other items unless you get the SE.
