Forget the order! The SE is only worth it if you get the $5500 dealer incentive plus the GM discount. Without them the car is overpriced! Whatever you do, don't ever sign a purchase contract or order anything without knowing the exact final price.
Memo to your dealer: on an SE, there are NO funky combinations of options. Now you know that some dealers are lazy so you'll have to do the vehicle search yourself. Go to the Saab-USA website, get the phone number for all dealers within a 250-mile radius (or more) of your house, and start calling. If you find a car, make an offer and Go-Greyhound to pick it up. Make sure you get a signed offer in writing. Include the Passat and get a few thousand for it in trade. You'll save on the HazMat disposal fee.
We just got a 2001 9-3 SE in LA with 5-speed, heated seats, and gray metallic paint. Got the GM supplier discount ($2206) and $5500 dealer incentive so our cost was $26364 + tax/license. Didn't have too many problems finding a 5-speed SE in Los Angeles but most Saabs here are automatics (since the local braintrust prefers to talk on their cell phones instead of shifting) so we had to consider alternate color combos. My wife wanted green with beige leather but the only SE 5-sp like that (allegedly) was in San Francisco -- 450 miles away! -- so you may not get the exact color you want in your area. The dealer was willing to have the car shipped to us for around $400 but we got steel gray with beige leather instead. We love it and think the color will still look good five years from now -- the green now seems a little trendy in retrospect. One other option for you is to get the car on Tourist Delivery. You won't get the $5500 off or the supplier discount but you'll get a discount from sticker (about 8%) and two tickets to Trollhattan.
Good Luck!
