Being the yank I am, I misunderstood the Euro concept of the single rear fog light as well...until I saw a Volvo and a Porsche with the exact same set-up. Ultimately, I just put a bulb in the empty socket on the passenger side. I've yet to be rear-ended.
On a different note, and not to be a dick or anything, but comparing the driving quality of a Civic to that of a Saab is like comparing apples and oranges. I'm pretty sure your Civic was incapable of harnessing the amount of torque that a 205hp (stock) engine can provide. Paying attention to the driving aspect of the ride in your Saab is pretty much the fun of driving a Saab...at least in my experience.
