I leased a '97 900S for a great deal, (low money rate, GM discount, dealer threw in $900 towards the downpayment). When my lease was up, I looked around at comparable vehicles and found nothing for close to what my buyout cost was. I then realized that leasing then buying still saved me quite a bit of money because of the deal, the low money rate, and the small amount of up-front cost. Also, I was able to talk Chase out of making me pay the last month of the lease so I saved money there.
In the end I think I saved over having bought it outright but your case may be different. Research it well.
